Michael, 76, is housebound and uses the WRVS Scottish Borders Rural Transport service.
Up to about three or four years ago Michael was able to get around and live normally. He became immobile very quickly, started to lose independence and within three months had become completely reliant on other people.
Until he found out about WRVS transport he wasn’t getting out at all. Being able to get out of the house and regain some independence has made a huge difference to Michael. Michael has the same volunteer driver for every trip, he enjoys the journey as much as getting to the final destination.
“The service is absolutely brilliant; it has totally altered my life.
“We discuss everything, we don’t argue about politics or religion, we put the country to rights and we have a bloody good laugh, it’s absolutely smashing.
“When people turn around and say to me ‘I am unable to get out because…’ with all due respect it’s rubbish, if you want to get out the WRVS supply transport. You can stop losing independence, find a different life. You’re getting out and about and what more does one want? I cannot fault the WRVS and I’m not giving you a load of old cobblers!”
