Alistair's story

Volunteer AlistairAlistair is Head of Business and Brand Development at a top recruitment and human resources company in London. He began volunteering for WRVS in 2005.

“I’ve always thought about charity work but it’s always so much easier to give money than time. A friend put me in touch with WRVS as they needed some help with resourcing strategies - my expertise. The challenges, in some ways, are no different from those I have come across in the commercial sector.

“With any client, its important to identify with their situation and see that you could enjoy working with them. WRVS is a charity that focuses on community and helping people retain dignity in life. This really touched a part of me and is something I value. WRVS valued my help, but more importantly wanted me to establish a framework they could use in the future and coach some of the team members.

“I gained a good insight into a different sector and evaluating the success of a significant project can only bring new learning.

“I've stayed on as a volunteer and continue to enjoy working on an advisory basis.”
