Kathleen's story

WRVS volunteer Kathleen

Kathleen first began volunteering for WRVS when she retired as a wages clerk. That was over 25 years ago.

"Volunteering has almost been a way of life for me; I have now given over 26 years to WRVS and received my 25 year service medal last year. I started once the children had grown up and were doing their own things. When I retired I wanted to keep busy and volunteering seemed to be the ideal answer.

"I first joined WRVS in Newport, South Wales. At the time I helped in the local hospital, The Royal Gwent serving teas and coffees in Accident and Emergency. I also helped in the blood donors clinic and later took over organising the hospitality side of the magistrates court. Whilst living in Newport I also helped in the WRVS tent at the annual Royal Welsh Show.

"I later moved to be closer to my family. To help me settle I decided to carry on with my voluntary work and began helping in the WRVS buffet bar in Worthing Hospital. Unfortunately after 18 months the travelling became very demanding so I transferred to a local community transport scheme which was much closer to home for me.

"Since then I've given several hours a week helping out with various office duties and I'm still there at the age of 87 and loving every minute."
