Leyla's story

Volunteer LeylaLeyla is at school but also volunteers in the Royal Sick Children’s Hospital in Edinburgh. She helps out a often as she can on Friday afternoons after school. She started volunteering after visiting her brother who was in the hospital a few years ago. She was so impressed by the care that he was given and recognised the valuable work the volunteers did and that it was a good opportunity for her in the future.

“Volunteering will definitely help me when I go to university and apply for jobs as they’ll see I have the past experiences."

Watch Leyla talk about why she is a volunteer.

“I do the Duke of Edinburgh Award and I need to do service for that so I thought WRVS would be a really good thing to do. I want to be a paediatrician as well hopefully and so the Sick Children’s Hospital is the ideal place.

“I haven’t heard of any other young people volunteering who are as young as me in my school and it would be really nice if they could because they don’t really realise how it is quite a good experience.

"I enjoy going in and know that some of the people who come into the hospital and the café probably haven’t had a very nice day and it's just nice to give them their tea or coffee or packet of crisps and bring a smile to their faces and that’s quite nice.”
