What we think

WRVS thinks every older person in Britain has the right to live the life they want.
Some older people do, but many still don’t have access to the choices and opportunities that most of us take for granted and have to settle for less as they get older. That’s got to stop.
There’s an opportunity right now to make Britain a much better place to grow old. We want to work with partners, governments and people in the communities throughout the UK to make it happen.
As well as delivering practical services, WRVS also campaigns to raise awareness of the issues that older people face. We aim to raise awareness of specific issues and create changes in funding, behaviour and potentially government policy that will improve quality of life for older people in our local communities.
Scotland
Almost all of the issues relevant to older people in Scotland are now under the control of the Scottish Executive and the Scottish Parliament.
Since devolution in 1999 much has changed for older people in Scotland, with policies like free public transport and free personal care for older people hitting the headlines.
We're working hard to ensure that Scottish laws and policies provide the best possible outcomes for older people and volunteers, both now and in the future and actively respond to key national initiatives, consultation papers, policies and draft laws.
Wales
WRVS is an active partner in contributing to debates affecting the lives of older people in Wales. We work with elected representatives (particularly Members of the Welsh Assembly), civil servants, and voluntary groups to shape the development of policy and to help make Wales a great place to grow old.
In recent years, this has meant contributing to policy consultations, for example by giving evidence to the Commission on Social Services in 2010. We also work closely with bodies such as the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Age Cymru and Age Alliance Wales to argue that older people’s issues should be considered as part of any policy change in Wales.
