Over one million older people will be alone this Christmas |

Be a star, help WRVS change this
WRVS is calling on people throughout the UK to do their bit to tackle loneliness
amongst older people this Christmas. Be a star this Christmas by;
• visiting
a neighbour, friend or relative you know will be alone during the festive period
• donating
money to help WRVS reach more older people.
“Over one million people are likely to spend Christmas alone this year.
Most rarely see anyone day-to-day throughout the year and the loneliness this
causes becomes particularly depressing at Christmas-time”, said WRVS
chief executive, Mark Lever.
“We’re calling on everyone to help spread a bit of Christmas cheer
to people who usually feel frozen out. You could call around to an older neighbour
that lives alone for a mince pie or a chat, contact an elderly friend or relative
you haven’t spoken to for ages and arrange to meet over Christmas, or even
invite them for Christmas dinner. Or you can donate
a gift to WRVS which will help us to reach more lonely older people this Christmas.”
WRVS and our 70,000 volunteers run community
centres and social clubs, and provides home visits, Meals
on Wheels and other services to older people throughout Britain, enabling
them to enjoy life more and crucially, helps them keep in touch with other people
and avoid loneliness.
WRVS' campaign will run until the New Year to encourage all of us to do something
for older people this Christmas through posters in prominent sites, lobbying to
involve local MPs, fundraising to help provide more WRVS services for older people
in the future and volunteers asking friends and family to help older people all
year round.
