VITA aimed to promote the value and impact of older volunteers and to increase the number of over 65s volunteering by removing barriers across the voluntary and community sector.

The programme set about to promote best practice within organisations and encourage older people to value their skills enough to want to use them within their communities.

 
VITA also

 provided a national focal point for older volunteering

 worked to provide support and information for organisations who wanted to recruit older people

 raised the profile of older volunteers and promoted their value to voluntary and community organisations

 identified barriers to recruiting older volunteers and worked to remove them.
