I’ve got MS. The occupational therapist asked me ‘What about WRVS?
you could be a telephone volunteer’. I thought I could do that in the comfort
of my own home so long as I was able to make out the numbers using my magnifying
glass.
It’s been great since then. I have nothing but time so I don’t
mind dealing with calls later because I know I’m helping someone. The opportunities
I now have to put something into society is of significant value to me, because
it has given me a sense of purpose and added a great deal to the quality of my
life.

Retired nurse Gwen Berry, 87, cheerfully puts people half
her age to shame with her tireless fundraising for veterinary charity, PDSA.
Gwen
started volunteering for the charity 16 years ago at 71 and hasn’t
looked back. “In 2004 the charity nominated me for the PDSA Volunteer of
the Year award. I organise a team of 15 fundraising volunteers and last
year we raised enough money to buy equipment for Sheffield PDSA Pet Aid and to
help cover some of the cost of treating pets with diabetes.
I was thrilled to
be named PDSA volunteer of the year. I have helped raise several thousand pounds
for PDSA and, although I may be one of the older volunteers, that doesn’t
stop my fundraising. In fact, I look forward to raising even more.”
